Jovi Schnell was born in 1971 in Ozark hills in Arkansas. She has lived in Amsterdam, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles where she is currently based. Schnell’s work germinates in concepts of cross-pollination. She often utilizes the plant, its form and functioning as a metaphorical vehicle for life itself. She is interested in creating forms and visual fields that fuse the schematics of cultural and natural systems together. Hope and a dry humor hang in balance between ambiguous logic, progress, and the unknown. More recently her work has incorporated chance operations as a way to prompt negotiations and actions in the studio as well as thwart personal hierarchy and taste. Themes that course through her work explores relationships to nature, evolution, invention and time.
