If your work wardobe is in need of an upgrade, we’ve got just the inspiration for you. While many of us may work in an office that requires specific dressing guidelines, that doesn't mean we can't find ways to stand out in the crowd of skirt suits and unexpressive outfits.
We may have our go-to looks we reach for during the work week, but there are tips and tricks that can help freshen up your work wardrobe and help give your current office outfits an instant update and show you how to break the mold with your office style.
1. Invest in dresses
We are big fans of reaching for just one garment in our closet and viola, outfit complete. Especially on those mornings when you've slept through your alarm or rushed through your shower and have little to no time to contemplate what to wear to work. While having great dresses to reach for are perfect on this type of morning, they are also a great piece to have in arm's reach on those days we seem to "have nothing to wear". The key is to make sure you love the way each of your dresses fit and you feel confident in them!
Owner of the styling service Nothing2Wear, Catenya McHenry says dresses are one of the best garments to have on hand for a fast, yet polished outfit. “Dresses are likely the most versatile pieces a girl can have,” McHenry says. “Layered with a chambray top and tied in the front, or worn with a cropped denim jacket or even styled with a tissue-thin tee underneath, the options are endless.”
2. Stick to the basics
While we love printed clothing, a wardrobe consisting of lots of basic styles and simple structures is a more easily styled closet that can help create timeless outfits for the workplace. But no worries for those print-loving women, in fact a wardrobe filled with high quality basics make the way for your statement garments to really pop and do all of the talking.
3. Skip leggings and skinny jeans, reach for joggers
While leggings seem to have been the staple of our younger days, we are leading more professional and put-together lives today and our style shoulder reflect that. One way to break the mold with your office style is to debunk the theory that office wear can't be comfortable. Instead of relying on leggings for comfort, or the often work backup skinny jeans, incorporate a few pairs of chic joggers into your wardrobe.
You can find joggers in all types of fabrics and prints, but our personal favorite is the silk jogger pant. This particular style of joggers leads way for a more polished look, while remaining just as comfortable since silk is uber soft and functional. Want to add even more personality to your look? Reach for printed silk joggers that will really get your unique style noticed!
4. Wear ankle boots, instead of flats
While a cute pair of flats is on everyone's radar for office attire, get your hands on a pair of ankle boots for a classic, fashionable and functional style option instead. In fact, adding a great pair of ankle boots to your work wardrobe is a smart investment too. Unlike high heels and flats, ankle boots can be worn all year long and don't need to be switched out during the colder winter months. Look for black or brown leather styles and for added edge, choose a pointed toe or a pair with grommet details.
5. Own a classic carry-all
Often considered the final touch and the last piece you add to polish your outfits before heading out the door, a handbag is a must-have accessory to top off a chic workwear look. The key to finding the perfect purse is to add a carry-all style that is not only stylish, but functional for work too. This can be a satchel or tote, or any structured style that is versatile enough to wear everyday to work. To break the mold in your office, we love the idea of going bold! Choose a vibrant, yet classic shade like a rich red or burnt orange to really push the envelope of plain office style.
6. Edge up your pantsuit game
There are plenty of pantsuits out there that are a bore and anything but breaking the mold in office style. However, designers and brands have caught on and are creating pantsuits with flare and personality-creating the perfect balance for unique work wear. One way to elevate your pantsuit game is to mix prints. Pair a stripe undershirt with a neutral pair of polka dot trousers. Or break the mold in a bright color like yellow or cobalt blue. Since the style remains structured and classic, fun colors will actually work in the office space!
