This month’s Artteca Artist Spotlight is the Mexican-born artist, Pepe Mar. Mar received his BFA from the California College of Arts (CCA), San Francisco, in 2001, and his MFA from Florida International University, Miami, in 2013. He currently lives in Miami, Fl where he is represented by David Castillo Gallery.
Pepe Mar’s technique is complex. He infuses his works with a grand spectrum of color and an array of figures and shapes. Mar is known and loved for his collage creations, which are far from harmonious. However, these pieces hypnotically draw the eye deeper and deeper, enamoring viewers. Mar’s art expresses a plethora of emotions that allows viewers to escape into a fantasy of color and form.
Pepe Mar carries an expertise in materiality that is depicted through his assemblage design and ability to explore the concept of cultural alienation.
Mar’s work has been exhibited nationally, with notable exhibitions at Locust Projects, Freight + Volume, Gavin Brown Enterprise, and the Nada Art Fair. Pepe Mar’s work has also appeared in Sculpture Magazine, Art News, The New York Times and Art in America.
