From visions of seductive tropics to elaborate installations. Colombian born Gonzalo Fuenmayor creates what can only be imagined in his conception of bananas in Buckingham Palace, a banana tree in a classical theater and a chandelier constructed of bananas-just to name a few.
In 2014 Fuenmayor created an installation named Eden at the Faena Hotel on Miami Beach as part of Art Basel and in anticipation of the hotel’s debut in 2015. This year, the artist was commissioned to create a mural at the same billion dollar hotel. The spectacular work, titled Limbo, was completed just a few weeks ago.
Fuenmayor’s most recent inspiration stems from a his awarded traveling fellowship from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. In 2014, the artist visited Leticia, Columbia. A city located in the heart of the Amazon, prevalent with his works’ motif: the banana.
Gonzalo is also most noted for his charcoal work. His charcoal drawings are so realistic, they are often confused for actual black and white photographs.
The Faena Hotel features the artists’ drawings and photographs in the hotel rooms.
And check out Gonzolo creating another piece for the Faena Hotel just days ago, this time for the hotel’s restaurant.

Fuenmayor is not the only artist to collaborate with the hotel. English artist and art collector Damien Hirst‘s extraordinary “Gone But Not Forgotten“, a golden skeleton of a woolly mammoth presented in a steel and glass display, makes the pool at Faena Hotel it’s home.
This 18 million dollar, gilded gold leaf installation will soon make it’s way to the Faena Forum, a non-profit organization with a concept to provide an array of activities encouraging collaborations across geographic and philosophic borders.
Another renown artist that has collaborated with the Faena Hotel, Juan Gatti.
The illustrator and designer, who has worked among the leaders of global brands such VOGUE and CBS Records, displays his work throughout the hotel from the mosaic tiles in the swimming pool, to the wallpaper in Tierra Santa spa. Perhaps the most grand of all, his eight awe-inspiring murals in the Cathedral hall.
The hotel just celebrated it’s grand opening with celebrity guests that included Andre Balazs, Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Deitch Leonardo DiCaprio, Simon & Michaela de Pury, Mario Testino, and wil.i.am.
The launch of the Faena Hotel begins the second part of openings in the Faena District of Miami beach, with the purpose and promise to strengthen Miami’s art connection.
